Cats' Secret sipping milk

The secret of how cats breathe in water or milk with a very graceful, a phenomenon that took place so quickly that no human being can be followed by the views.
Cats are among many species, unlike humans, can not shut my mouth and suck.
With the help of high-speed video recorded on the liquid is inhaled by cats, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University found that domestic cats and wild cats such as tigers balance the force of gravity and inertia as they suck up the liquid.
The study will be published in the journal Science, published Friday (12/11/2010). Scientists already know that when cats insert their tongue into the bowl of liquids, the surface of the tongue touching the liquid at first, then the ends are curved like the letter J to form a kind of a big spoon.
It was first observed by an MIT engineer, who recorded a cat who was sipping liquids in 1940, a report by French news agency AFP.
However, by studying these images, researchers can now decide that there was no impact of a spoon. But the cat's tongue instead move out and into his mouth so quickly that the action was to form a liquid column.
"Cats, unlike dogs, do not plunge their tongues into the liquid to form like a spoon," said a statement from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT.
In fact, the tip of the tongue of smooth cat "barely touches the surface of the liquid before the cat was quickly pulled his tongue back into his mouth."
"Because the cat is doing the action, one lane of milk formed between the tongue is moved and the liquid surface. The cat then shut his mouth, and clamped ends for fluid strip to enjoy his drink, while the animal is keeping his chin still dry, "he said
Lane fluid "created by the gentle balance between the force of gravity, which pulls fluid back into the bowl, and inertia, which in physics, refers to the tendency of liquid or objects of any kind, keep moving in one direction unless other forces intervene."
Cat "instinctively know how to quickly suck up in order to balance the two resources, and when to shut his mouth. If the animal is wait a second, the strength of gravity will take over inertia, so that the lane was divided, so that the liquid falls back into the bowl, and the cat's tongue into his mouth empty. "
Cats lick the average four times per second. Each lick bring as much as 0.1 milliliters of liquid, the researchers said. He added that a larger cat licking in a more sluggish.
